Visit NC's domestic sales mission sees great response

Visit NC's Amanda Baker led Visit NC's annual domestic sales mission last week, which began in Atlanta, Ga., and finished in Savannah. Visit Cabarrus, Visit Charlotte, Visit Johnston County and Visit Winston-Salem participated in appointments and a lunch-and-learn with pre-qualified group tour operators and AAA offices while networking with each other along the way. For more information on the domestic sales mission, or for more ways to partner with Visit North Carolina for domestic group marketing, contact Amanda Baker at (919) 447-7765
Holiday updates requested for VisitNC.com database

It's never too early to get Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and other holiday events on VisitNC.com. Especially of interest are those holiday events that are unique to an area that would inspire a potential visitor to make a trip just to attend that particular event. One can view the current event listings on VisitNC.com. If a signature or notable event isn't listed, tourism partners can discuss a potential listing with the appropriate DMO county contact, who's responsible for each county's listings on VisitNC. Events must be in the database before Visit NC can consider them for editorial or PR mentions.
N.C.-filmed American Animals receives 11 BIFA nominations

American Animals was recognized with 11 nominations for the British Independent Film Awards, the second most of any film for this year's competition. The N.C.-filmed production's category nominations include Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Casting and Best Supporting Actor. Winners will be announced at the BIFA awards ceremony in London on Dec. 2. American Animals filmed in Gaston, Iredell and Mecklenburg counties last year, and had a direct in-state spend of $6,277,307 while creating 1,222 job opportunities. The project received a rebate from the state's film and entertainment grant of $1,569.326.75. American Animals was heavily recruited by the N.C. Film Office, which was assisted by the Charlotte Regional Film Commission. The film had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, this past January, and has played at several festivals across the U.S., including South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, and opened the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem.
Fed Cup returning to Asheville in 2019

Officials from the U.S. Tennis Association said yesterday (Tuesday) the Fed Cup will return to Asheville in February. It is the last of the four first-round venues to be announced for next year's Fed Cup, the largest international women's team event in the world. It will pit the defending-champion U.S. team against Australia. U.S. Tennis Association's Jeff Ryan said it's uncommon for a city to host Fed Cup events in consecutive years. But Ryan said the decision to return to Asheville wasn't especially difficult. "It takes a special city to be considered to host a Fed Cup tie, especially for a second time," he said. "But the support and passion Asheville last year showed for the players of this event, it was second to none. It was really a special time and it really made the decision to come back very easy." The week drew thousands of visitors to downtown Asheville, generating an estimated $3.5 million in economic impact for the area.

You can't manage what you don't measure

Are you measuring your waste generation to determine how well you are doing with the waste reduction and recycling program at your hotel, restaurant, attraction, or other business? If not, you should be! It is essential to measure the inflow of materials and compare that to the amount that is sent to the landfill. Performing a waste assessment is a powerful way to develop an effective waste reduction program, reduce disposal costs and track a facility's success. A helpful tool is the Green Lodging Calculator, which shows how much progress is and can be made with a business' sustainability program. For assistance and information about benchmarking and waste reduction, contact NC GreenTravel Initiative program manager Tom Rhodes at (919) 707-8140
