Visit NC's June webinar tomorrow looks at Outdoor NC initiative

For its June webinar tomorrow, Visit NC will focus on the Outdoor NC initiative, which was established to ensure North Carolina's treasured outdoor resources continue to thrive for the 51 million people who visit these spaces annually. The webinar will serve as a recap on where the initiative started, how it got to where it is now, and the direction it's headed.

Whether you are an Outdoor NC Partner or not, you'll want to join to see all the exciting new programs that will be offered in the coming months. The webinar will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Click here to register.

Deadline this Friday to participate on North Carolina Featured Destination page

This Friday is the deadline for tourism partners to participate with Travelzoo’s Featured Destination page for North Carolina. Visit NC has teamed up with Travelzoo, a global deals publisher with 30 million members worldwide, to promote the state and help drive more visitors to its hotels and attractions. Visit NC will have a Featured Destination page on Travelzoo’s website, which will be promoted on their media network starting in July.

Visit NC partners have the opportunity to submit an offer for consideration to be included on this dedicated page. Please note that not every offer will be approved and incomplete offer submissions will not be reviewed. Space on the page is limited, but tourism partners are encouraged to fill out this Google submission form.
Offers must be received by this Friday.

For questions, contact Dana Grimstead; for questions about the form or advice on crafting an offer, contact the Travelzoo existing client team.

‘The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster’ premieres this Friday

The N.C.-filmed feature “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster,” a production that debuted at the film festival portion of South by Southwest, is set to be officially released in theaters and on demand this Friday (June 9). Filmed entirely in Mecklenburg County in 2022, the production is a modern-day take on Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and focuses on a teenage anti-hero, Vicaria, who is on a desperate quest to cure death. The project hails from Crypt TV and is its first feature film. As verified by a production audit, the film had a direct in-state spend of more than $2 million and employed 190 individuals. The project was awarded a rebate via the N.C. Film and Entertainment Grant. View the trailer here.

Gaster notes writers’ strike affects N.C. film industry in many ways

The N.C. Film Office’s Guy Gaster was interviewed last week by WFAE (NPR affiliate in Charlotte) for its “N.C. film industry feels impact from ongoing writers' strike .” The number of productions reaching out to the film office is down 25 percent compared with this same time last year, according Gaster. He began to see the slowdown in November 2022, as studios began bracing for a possible strike. Gaster said the slowdown is affecting not only local film and TV writers, but many other members of the industry as well. "We're talking about the film professionals – those professional crew members. There is some local acting talent that is also obviously being impacted, and then the businesses and, in particular, the small businesses that work regularly with the film industry and productions that are filming in the state," he said.

Research shows

Pent-up demand for travel, and particularly international travel, is expected to continue during the next year. Recent research by Destination Analysts notes that nearly a third of U.S. travelers plan to travel outside of the United States for leisure in the next 12 months. This figure has been consistently within 5 percentage points during the last year.

While many Americans expect to travel overseas during the next year, inbound international travel continues to improve. Overseas arrivals improved to its best post-pandemic level in March to 25 percent below 2019 levels, according to the U.S. Travel Association . U.S. Travel notes there are still differences in recovery among overseas markets. Visitation from the U.K. and Germany have returned to approximately 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels; Japan and China, while improving, are still far behind. Visitation from India is the only major market to exceed 2019 levels.

Visit NC will be providing frequent research updates through Newslink with links to available studies.
