Visit NC participates with Travel South USA

Earlier this month, Visit North Carolina's Wit Tuttell and Heidi Walters participated in the Travel South USA Global Partner Sales & Media Mission to Italy and France. Along with Greater Raleigh CVB's Scott Peacock, 17 representatives from six states conducted appointments with travel trade and media in Milan, Italy, and Lyon and Paris, France. During the last five years, Visit NC has been a partner with Travel South in these emerging markets. In that time, North Carolina has seen an increase in visitation and revenues from Europe. RDU has a daily non-stop from France (CDG) and CLT has seasonal non-stops from Rome and Paris. For more information on Visit NC's international marketing, contact Heidi Walters at (919) 447-7762.

Elizabeth City becomes the latest addition to Retire NC

Visit NC's Wit Tuttell and Andre Nabors presented the City of Elizabeth City with its N.C. Certified Retirement Community certificate today. Elizabeth City is the 18th community designated for the program. The distinction means the state has certified that Roanoke Rapids has the infrastructure and amenities sought by retirees. In addition, EDPNC/Visit North Carolina will provide promotional assistance to help encourage retirees to visit and relocate to those areas. Elizabeth City met a rigorous set of requirements, including a comprehensive community survey and an asset assessment of the community's preparedness for retiree attraction. Now that it has been named a CRC, Elizabeth City will work with Visit North Carolina to promote the community as a great relocation destination for retirees through Retire NC and consumer trade shows, such as Ideal Living Resort & Retirement Expo.

Elizabeth City is the latest community to be designated into the NC Certified Retirement Community Program, joining Asheboro, Eden, Edenton, Jamestown/High Point, Laurinburg/Scotland Co., Lenoir, Lumberton, Marion, Mount Airy, New Bern, Pittsboro, Reidsville, Roanoke Rapids, Sanford/Lee County, Tarboro, Washington, and Winterville. To find out more about RetireNC and the Certified Retirement Community program, contact André Nabors at (919) 447-7771.

MMGY detects possible softness in leisure travel

For the first time in 12 years, travel marketing firm MMGY forecasts a decline in the number of vacations Americans will take. MMGY's survey asked travelers about their intentions to travel more, less, or the same in the year ahead compared to the previous 12 months. Twenty-one percent of travelers indicated an intention to take more vacations, while 30 percent said they plan to take fewer, resulting in a 9-point negative variance in vacation intentions. This is the first time that variance has been negative in the 12 years the question has been asked, and it raises a concern about a softening of the leisure travel market in the months ahead. In the next 12 months, travelers intend to take an average of 2.9 vacations, down from an average of three in 2017. While that change isn't statistically significant - it is within the margin of error - MMGY believes it could indicate the beginning of a decline of the number of vacations taken.

Making your recycling program work

Recycling is a basic part of any efforts to reduce a business' environmental impact, but despite the fact that many tourism professionals recycle at their home, some fail to continue their recycling efforts at work. Much of the time, the lack of recycling occurs due to a lack of knowledge and resources. So to assist N.C .businesses interested in recycling, the N.C. Division of Environmental Assistance and Outreach has developed a Recycling Business Assistance Center, which includes a Recycling Markets directory as well as business assistance. You can also find local government recycling contacts who can assist with local recycling information as well as information about electronics recycling. For further information on recycling at tourism-related businesses, contact NC GreenTravel manager Tom Rhodes at (919) 707-8140.
